Lithgow is set to host NSW U15 Girls State Hockey championships

A total of 36 teams will travel from across NSW to Lithgow, bringing 500 female athletes plus supporters to town.

Lithgow Hockey Association representative coordinator Adam Whichelo said over 1000 people would visit Lithgow, bringing money into the local economy.

"Hosting a championship is a significant sporting event for the town and has a very positive financial impact for the town with all teams booking accommodation and spending money to eat out," he said.

Lithgow's Zig Zag Motel is one business among many, who will benefit from the event with its motel booked out over the three days.

Motel director Michael Inzitari said the visitors would be taking up accommodation in 76 out of their 100 rooms.

"We've got two big groups in New England Hockey and Southern Highlands Hockey.

"They've booked the restaurant so we will have a very busy weekend ahead and we're looking forward to it," he said.

Mr Inzitari said hockey events had been fantastic for Lihgow and its businesses to thrive over the years.

Lithgow was due to host the state championships in 2020 but due to COVID-19 it was postponed.

Whichelo said it was a positive to be able to host the event this year and hoped it would inspire other young girls in Lithgow to play hockey.

"Hosting a hockey state championships allows all of our town to come and watch a sport that celebrates inclusiveness, diversity as well as girls of all skill levels participate against other areas of NSW," he said.
