Parents who were at Wallerawang Public School for a special presentation noticed the smoke before alerting the school who then called the fire brigade.
The parents also grabbed fire extinguishers and contained the blaze to the bin before Wallerawang Fire and Rescue arrived around 3.20pm to put out the blaze.
"At this stage it seems like it has come from a drum that contained materials they are using to re-do the floor inside the stadium, or at least that is what it smelt like," a Wallerawang Fire and Rescue representative said.

"The materials have just over heated in this weather and caused a fire."
The fire-fighter said that residents needed to be careful in the current climate.
"Just be careful, the weather is expected to get hotter tomorrow and there will be wind," he said.
