The last department store of its kind in the Lithgow region, the Dimmeys building is on the site of Bracey's, a Lithgow institution until its closure when its final owners, David and Gordon Bracey, retired.
After a time of closure, Dimmeys became part of the Lithgow Main Street landscape with its easily recognisable red signage.
In 2017 the building went under wraps for a time as scaffolding was put in place during works to rectify defective brick work.
The closure of the Lithgow store is part of a company-wide move by Dimmeys, which has its head offices in Victoria.
The company has been operating since 1853 and aimed to provide the old-fashioned department store experience - a place you could find manchester, giftware, footwear and grocery items all together.
The closing down sale, announced on the Dimmeys Facebook page, began in Lithgow on Wednesday morning, November 20.
The Lithgow Mercury has approached Dimmeys headquarters for comment.
