After some overnight rain the greens were entitled to be slow but due to the great work of the greenkeepers all playing surfaces were presented in great order.
Jeff Brown was partnered with Richie Bilby and Ian Townsend in a triples championship game to start his first championship game, and proved a worthy acquisition from Thursday night twilights to assist his team to a 29-14 victory over Darryl Wright, Rob Ritchie and Kerry Clarke.
This year's triples is played over 25 ends and each player has two bowls.
Gary Bender, John Perry and Al Kenniff were drawn against Mark and Wayne Allan and Kevin Shorney. Winning 16 of the 25 ends was instrumental in seeing Kenniff's team victorious, actually winning the last 11 ends to record a 33-14 win.
A much closer match was witnessed when Les Barnes, Warren Kennedy and Ted Healey took on Gil Mendosa, Al Case and Gary Sutherland. Six all after six ends lent towards the match being close throughout and it proved so.
The score was 22-20 Sutherland leading after 20 ends and securing three more shots gave them a five shot lead. End 24 was crucial with a six going to Barnes and ultimately a lead which they were able to maintain, winning 30-25.
Jeff Madden's team of Dave Robson and Jim Bannerman got away to a flying start against Davey Hunter, Richard Forbes and Billy Anderson leading 21-4 after 13 ends and eventually winning 38-8.
Michael Johnson's team comprising Col Wotton and Athol Roach were too strong for the Campbell boys, Stan and Darrell and Barry Perry, winning a one-sided affair 42-5.
Quarter finals next week should be interesting, with some teams having had the bye joining the competition as well as those winners mentioned.
Another of the club events being played, the McMurtrie Pairs, has progressed to the semi-final stage, and the four remaining teams left to fight out the event are Peter Kearney and Marie Stewart, Fay King and Athol Roach, Les and June Barnes and Warren Kennedy and Bev Wiggins. They hope to play these matches at the weekend.
