Sixty-four year old Greg Chidgey from Winmalee has packed his essentials into a garden trolley weighing 50 kilograms, and tied up his hiking shoes for the most hardest, yet rewarding walk of a lifetime - all the way to Cairns.
Greg began his journey from Springwood on Monday, April 1 and has since had to overcome an array of challenges on his way to Lithgow.
Not only has he battled the misty mountain weather, he's also managed to pull his 50 kilogram garden trolley up River Lett Hill, a feat which took him 45 minutes.
Along the way, he was lucky enough to receive a helping hand from Lithgow locals and businesses including Hartley Fresh & Cafe, Luscious Lucy Plump 'mmm' Juicy, The Commercial Hotel Lithgow and Onelia's Place.
"Everyone has been so welcoming as soon as I got here, the police rescue even helped me get my trolley down Mount Victoria pass, Hartley gave me food and drink and offered to share my story and check in with me, Luscious Lucy went to pay for a hotel room but the Commercial insisted I stay free of charge and this morning I enjoyed a delicious breakfast from Onelia's.
"I'm touched by the community spirit of Lithgow," Greg said.
Greg also received help from the Lithgow Salvation Army to lift his trolley into a car as he set off to his next location Cullen Bullen.
"Unfortunately my support vehicle pulled out last minute so it's a bit of a bugger to cart around 50 kilos, but I'm thankful for the help, it makes all the difference," he said.
Lithgow Salvation Army volunteer Bruce Hanmer said he hoped to link up with other Salvos stores in the direction that Greg was headed, to help him with his garden trolley.
"I'm going to call Mudgee Salvation Army and let them know he's on his way. We don't mind helping, it's all for a good cause," he said.
The adventure continued for Greg as he arrived in Cullen Bullen on Wednesday, April 3 with the help of Winmalee resident Jenny Green who drove up to Lithgow this morning to assist him.
"I saw he needed help and he answered me at 7am so I jumped out of bed and drove to Lithgow. I've never met Greg before but I wanted to help him succeed," Ms Green said.
The Cullen Bullen Progress Association also offered up their community hall to Greg and his gear for the night.
Greg said that despite the challenges he's faced, he just had to pick himself up and keep going.
"I've come across a few challenges already with my trolley being heavy, it knocked me over the other day, but being difficult, it mirrors MS and that's the point," he said.
He also said without the sort of help he received overnight in Lithgow, it would have been difficult to continue to get anywhere.
"I'm very appreciative, I can't thank the help enough," he said.
Greg planned to arrive in Mudgee on Friday, April 5, his trip to Cairns would take around two and a half months but he was hopeful to arrive early June.
"There has already been some delay but you have to consider that with all of the different variables," he said.
Greg's fundraising goal is $50,000 and while he doesn't think he will reach it, he is happy to raise as much money as he can.
To donate head to the do it for MS website and follow Greg's journey on 'The Big Walk' Facebook page.
- Greg is also still seeking a support driver so if you know anyone or see Greg walking while you're driving along, don't be shy to ask if he needs a hand.
