The incident occurred on Lithgow Street at around 5.40pm, just past the Lithgow Valley Plaza entry-exit roundabout.
Police are calling for anyone with dash cam footage of a small silver hatchback, possibly a Hyundai Getz or Ford, entering onto Lithgow Street from the southern end of the shopping centre heading towards Hassans Walls Road to contact police. Police believe it was a car matching this description which collided with a 48-year-old Lithgow man who was riding a pushbike.
The driver of the car appeared to be a woman in her 70's.
The cyclist was propelled into the air after impact and sustained serious head injuries and a large laceration to his right calf muscle.
The elderly driver travelled a further 20 metres along the road before stopping. Witnesses told police the woman then got out of her vehicle and walked up to the man on the road, before walking back to her car and driving away.
The cyclist was airlifted to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Police are still investigating and making inquiries in relation to the driver of the vehicle.
Lithgow Police urged anyone with dash cam footage or further information to come forward and contact them on 6352 8399.
