A Lithgow woman was punched in the head, pushed to the ground and had hair ripped out during the attack.
Kelly Nicholson, 27, was convicted in Lithgow Local Court on February 21 for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and sentenced to an eight month intensive corrections order (ICO). An ICO is a kind of prison sentence which is served within the community with set conditions.
The assault occurred at 8.30pm on November 16 last year. A 56-year-old walking to her home from Woolworths was approached from behind by Nicholson in Gas Works Lane.
The court heard that Nicholson wrapped her arm around the woman, who offered to walk her home as Nicholson appeared in intoxicated. Nicholson asked several times for the woman to take her home with her, which she refused.
After walking for some time in the direction indicated by Nicholson, the police statement of facts stated Nicholson suddenly approached the older woman from behind, grabbing her handbag strap and pulling it tight around her neck. The woman was able to get free. She was then punched in the side of the head and pushed to the ground. The attack continued, with the woman having her hair pulled, some of it yanked out completely.
Two witnesses called triple-zero, alerted by her screams. Nicholson fled, but was arrested in a nearby backyard.
