They are keen to spread the word that fire-fighting is an occupation that can work in with employment and family life. And now is the time to show your interest: Lithgow Fire and Rescue is currently recruiting.
Lithgow Fire and Rescue’s Jonathan Brown said there were many people at the station with young families that managed to work full time at their primary employment and juggle their family commitments, as well as working as retained fire-fighters.
The crew includes police officers, factory workers, prison officers, miners, horticulture, concreters and labourers, men and women. Retained fire-fighters balance their commitments with an ‘on-call’ role to provide a critical service for the community.
As well as attending fires, the crew responds to hazardous materials (HAZMAT), assist in rescues with ambulance crews and multiple other tasks to help the public.
“We never know what we could be responding to,” Brown said.
