Smashes looked like they would run away with their match against Grippers after taking the first two rubbers for a quick 4-0 lead.
Grippers had other ideas though, and six unanswered games put them ahead 6-4 nearing the halfway point. The teams split the next two rubbers, both winning one 2-0 to have Grippers still leading at 8-6.
It was Smashes that finished the better in the dying stages, as they claimed the last four games in the singles to go up 10-8, as well as both doubles, 2-1 and 2-0 respectively, to ease to a 14-9 triumph.
Smashes shared the glory, with Linda and Matthew Kappos both scoring 4-2 and Kelly Gurney 2-4.
Grippers' Lou Kappos played a brilliant captain's knock for a perfect 6-0 but it was to no avail, while Mark McAulay (2-4) and Pauline Wellfare (0-6) both struggled on the night.
