The Lithgow Mercury headed down to the bowling greens at the Lithgow Workies Club this week as part of our 'On the lawn" series, focusing on local bowlers.
We asked a few of the ladies and lads what they love about bowls and here's what they had to say.
Cynthia Thornton
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 20 odd years here and about 10 in Queensland.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: It's good fun, I enjoy the game, nothing better than playing bowls.
Q: Any highlights?
A: When we went away to state pennants.
Noela Williams, president
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 19 years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: The girls, they're great company and I love the competition.
Q: Any highlights?
A: Definitely the state pennants and challenge cup.
Sue Metcalf
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: Eight years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: I love the friendship and challenge of playing bowls.
Q: Any highlights?
A: I've had a few with the most recent being a semi-finalist in the Champions of Champions singles.
Cheryl Schram
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 10 years
Q: What do you love about it?
A: The competition and meeting new friends.
Q: Any highlights?
A: Winning the Western Division singles, triples and zone triples. Going to state pennants twice and coming runners up once.
Beryl Evans
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 25 years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: The companionship. I rely on these ladies for friendship
Q: Any highlights?
A: Being champions of state pairs twice and winning the prestigious Club Championships three times.
Gwyn Walding
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 12 years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: It's a way to enjoy myself and talk to friends.
Q: Any highlights?
A: Winning the minor and major singles in the same year back in 2017 - it's never been done before.
Brian Stewart
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: Six years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: I love the friendship and challenge of playing bowls.
Q: Any highlights?
A: Competitively no, I don't bowl that well, I just enjoy the company.
Col McDonnel
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: 15 years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: Well I live in Hazelbrook but I come here to play socially. The club was just that friendly I had to join them.
Q: Any highlights?
A: When I won Zone senior pairs with Kenny Poppett and went to state in my second year of playing here.
Richard Long
Q: How long have you been playing lawn bowls for?
A: Three years.
Q: What do you love about it?
A: I like the competition, the people here both the guys and girls are great - such good company.
Q: Any highlights?
A: I've been in a few finals but the success has not come to yet, hopefully it'll come.
