Help is on the way
WE knew just a little reminder was all that was needed. After last week's mention about Council secrecy Mayor Ray has got back to the column with at least partial answers to our inquiry on local issues. Seems things are moving on the unsightly Lithgow Library ''construction site'' and tenders for completion of the work will go to the February meeting; well over a year since the job started but these things can't be rushed. Finally there's also a report pending on options for returning a water supply to QE Park after years of drought. Nothing, though, on the park's badly vandalised southern fence. Too hard basket that one. But as old rocker Meatloaf would say ''..two out of three ain't bad'. The delayed reply was blamed on the holiday break.

Just do it
GOOD to see the ''Mayor of Newnes" Thomas Ebersoll recognised for his environmental work in the local Australia Day ceremony. Thomas is a genuine hands on enviro warrior who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. The maturing shrubbery along Geordie Street beside Farmers Creek was all the work of Thomas and a group of his European backpacker guests from his Newnes cabins.
A claim to fame
The Lithgow Mercury has reported that radar probes are to determine what unknowns lay below at the pioneer era Mt York Cemetery at Hartley Vale. Not the first time the old graveyard has come in for some preservation work but one with a difference. Which brings us to today's trivia piece that among those resting in disturbed peace is the father of Australian bush bard Henry Lawson. Dad was a house painter residing at Mt Victoria and Henry's real name was Niels Hertzberg 'Peter' Larsen which didn't sound quite appropriate for a legend of the Australian bush.
Hanging up his helmet
WHEN it comes to longevity in our coal industry you can't beat Mines Inspector Eddie Morgan who has just retired after a mammoth 64 years in coal. Eddie went down the mine for the first time in Scotland in 1957 and since coming to Oz in '76 has had numerous management and administration jobs around the Western Field and in Queensland. He was general manager with the Coalex conglomerate in '93 before finishing up as District Mines Inspector. A farewell was held at the Workies.
Hard times
WONDER what the future holds for the old Pizza Hut at Bowenfels. Nice and prominent on the highway and rapidly becoming a seriously vandalised eyesore. Pity when it was once so popular.
Crazy days
IT'S so far the craziest Summer we can recall. Reading 30 degrees one day and a corresponding 15 the next. Heat wave and new ice age all in one week. Soon we'll have the first signs of Autumn.
