Boy, was he wrong.
The 20-year-old has racked up nearly 130,000 followers on social media platform TikTok, and more than 3.5 million reactions to video snapshots of life on his family's Joel Joel property in Victoria's Wimmera district.
Zayne said he couldn't believe how many people were captivated by what he viewed as the mundanities of farm life.
"It's surprising how many people watch the videos and I get messages all the time asking questions or wanting what we do explained in more depth," he said.
"It's great to use the internet in a positive way and give someone an insight into what living in our part of the world is like.
"It's so easy and simple and people can learn new things."
Zayne's growing fame has also seen an unlikely sidekick thrust in to the spotlight - his pet lamb Johnny.
The ever-cool and patient Johnny has a permanent place on the front seat of Zayne's car, and can often be seen spruiking hats and merchandise from businesses across the region
"Dad and I were moving a mob of sheep and he was lagging behind a fair bit so I picked him up so he wouldn't fall behind," Zayne said.
"I made a video of him sitting in the front seat of the ute - the video went viral and it's just followed on from there."
Zayne acknowledged it had been a tough year for a lot of people and said he was happy his videos could give people a reason to smile.
"If I can put a smile on someone's face and maybe brighten their day it's all been worthwhile," he said.
"It's surreal knowing people are waiting for my videos every day.
In the news:
"It's all happened pretty fast. From sitting around being bored at home and restricted on where we can go, to having a large following on social media and putting smiles on people's faces is pretty humbling."
In September, Zayne opened an online store and has been selling jumpers with Johnny's face on it.
"I was doing a bit of research and thought why not," he said.
"I've sold more than 100 jumpers already so it's going pretty well."
