Flattering the grey wall is the iconic Gang Gang bird, for which the gallery is named after.

The bird can be found in Lithgow and is a charismatic slate-grey cockatoo with a distinctive scarlet crest.

The artist behind the new work is Katoomba woman Mandy Schoene-Salter who has been working on art for as long as she can remember.

Ms Schoene-Salter was contacted by Gang Gang Gallery owner Sharon Howard for a commission work on the outside of her building.

"She never wanted the whole wall done, but just something that would stand out like the Gang Gang," Ms Schoene-Salter said.

Ms Schoene-Salter said she then spent an hour coming up with the design before showing Sharon, who liked it.

"I then chose the worst week to come and do the artwork," she said.

Ms Schoene-Salter worked in cold, windy and rainy conditions in the days leading up to the snow event on Saturday, August 22.

"I had to stop and start, over the three days because the rain would come or it would be too windy to continue, but it was just so cold," she said.

Ms Schoene-Salter used a giant stencil to create her design.

"Sharon said she didn't want it to be a super realistic drawing if that makes sense, she wanted something different that would stand out," she said.

The Gang Gang bird on the building is coloured black, white and grey, with a red background to symbolise the colour of the birds head.

"I'm quite proud of how it turned out, being up close to it you don't really get the full effect but driving into town today I could see it from back on the road and it really does do something for the building," she said.

Ms Schoene-Salter said there were many benefits of street art in townships.

"It can bring tourists to the town and can turn heavily tagged areas into artworks," she said.

"It's good to see it popping up around more in Lithgow."
