Lithgow's Lachi Sharp was due to step out with the Kookaburras at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in July, something he's been working towards in his hockey career.

Now in uncertain times, the Olympics have been postponed to the northern summer of 2021 and Sharp said he's doing his best to remain positive.

"It's out of our control and there is bigger issues in the world at the moment, so it's the right decision.

"I'll be a year older and more mature, experienced as will the team, so I'm very confident we can still get the job done come Tokyo," he said.

Sharp said the Kookaburras would still train and prepare so they're ready to go for when the time comes.

"We still have running and gym programs to do at home, so this will keep us active and busy so that when we return to training we won't lose too much fitness or strength," he said.

Sharp recently arrived back home in Lithgow after driving home from Perth with a few mates.

He said he was unsure of when training would resume but he was glad to be back home.

"I'll just be keeping busy at home, catching up with mates and family and hopefully playing some golf," he said.

He said he would continue to look at the positives and urged others to do the same.

"The sooner everyone is on board with the restrictions in place the sooner we will all be able to get back to our normal lives so it is very important," he said.

Sharp said he also encouraged kids to continue being active.

"This can be done at home and there are plenty of videos on the internet about how to stay active whether it's hockey, soccer, footy or something else you're interested in," he said.

Hockey Australia (HA) said in an official statement that all Kookaburras and Hockeyroos athletes were instructed to return home.

"...Follow the necessary government protocols and remain socially responsible with planning now underway for a possible Olympics to be held sometime next year."

HA have also postponed the FIH Pro League which has been extended to May 17.

"This means the Hockeyroos' and Kookaburras' scheduled home matches against New Zealand on 16/17 May in Perth have been cancelled, together with the kids coaching clinics associated with the matches," the statement read.

The National High Performance Unit Daily Training Environment (DTE) in Perth has been closed until further notice in the best interests of athletes and staff.

HA stated it was important to follow necessary measures in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and will provide updates regarding community hockey and the 2021 calendar events in due course.
