Cr Deanna Goodsell has asked Lithgow City Council staff to examine the lights to see if they meet safety standards after she had a near miss using the intersection joining Bayonet Street, Flint McClelland Avenue and the Great Western Highway.
"People turning right can't see traffic coming at all up the hill," she said.
"And people driving up the hill are gunning it to try and get straight across the intersection before the lights change.
"It's not safe."
At the meeting of council on Monday, September 23, Cr Goodsell raised the issue as a notice of motion.
She said she residents had raised the traffic lights as an issue for motorists travelling in both directions.
"I have serious safety concerns for residents at the newly installed traffic lights on the Great Western Highway," the notice of motion read.
"Turning right from Bayonet Street onto the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst, there is minimal visibility of oncoming cars from Flint McClelland Ave which are travelling straight across the highway to Bayonet Street.
"The approaches from Bayonet Street and Flint McClelland Ave to the Great Western Highway are both on a steep incline."
She asked that council staff provide a report as to whether the traffic lights comply with road safety guidelines.
Cr Goodsell said she would like to see green arrows installled as part of the lights to ensure motorists could not come straight on when traffic is turning.
Traffic safety was high on the agenda at last night's meeting, with Cr Goodsell raising the ongoing issue of parking at Wallerawang Public School.
Cr Darryl Goodwin asked council to consider sealing Hassans Walls Road and creating a designated walking track in light of the recent serious crash in that area.
"As Lithgow is growing and the era of healthy lifestyles is taking hold, the walk up to Hassans Walls Lookout is becoming more and more popular with many people using the road recreationally from dawn to dusk," his notice of motion stated.
