Mr Stevenson said he couldn't wait to do it again this year.

"This will be my third year participating in the stair climb, it's a hectic thing but I really enjoy being involved," he said.

Mr Stevenson said that he will be raising money and 100 per cent of the proceeds would go towards vital MND research at the Macquarie University MND Research Centre.

"I'll be hosting a trivia night at the Gaudry as well as setting up at the plaza and rattling those buckets," he said.

MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease, that affects the nerve cells controlling the muscles that enable you to move, speak, breathe and swallow. Unfortunately, there is no cure.

"Hopefully one day we can find a cure," he said.

"I didn't realise how much doing this would actually mean to people, when I was speaking to a local woman, letting her know what I was doing she just broke down and hugged me, it meant a lot to her, to see someone raising money and awareness about this debilitating disease.

"So you can see around town [Lithgow] the affects this disease has on people."

As the only fire-fighter undertaking the climb from the Lithgow West station, he said he couldn't wait to meet others who are also participating in the event.

"My first year I did the climb in about 40 minutes, but that included me stopping and helping and chatting to others and I didn't really know what I was up against," he said.

In 2018 Mr Stevenson did the climb in 24 minutes.

"I was prepared, there are the fire entrance stairs and then they get smaller and they go up by nine at a time and there is also a dedication to someone at every floor," he said.

Mr Stevenson said he believed this was a really great project to endorse.

"It's also good for our fire fitness and giving everyone a sense of community," he said.

Mr Stevenson isn't the only fire fighter from Lithgow participating in the stair climb, with three of Lithgow Fire and Rescue squad's fire fighters also doing the climb.
