Babette Smith a well known Blackheath resident for 13 years until 2016 and a founding member of the Blackheath History Forum will oppose the idea that educated Irish rebels, English Chartists and Scottish Martyrs formed the basis of the Australian working class and that the reaction of ordinary prisoners to the convict system was the crucial factor in its making.
Ms Smith's first book, a 'Cargo of women' changed the understanding of women convicts. Her latest book, 'The Luck Of the Irish', focuses the wreck of the convict ship Hive on the South Coast of New South Wales in 1835.
