The first round of the season saw Zig Zag suffer a 8-nil loss to the top side but a few rounds later and sticking to a game plan on the weekend, caused the purples distress.

Despite the team tactics, Panthers rose to the occasion with Ashley Luka and Amanda Saladine finding the back of the net leading their side to a 2-nil victory.

Panthers struggled to find their feet in the first half after going down 2-1 to Orange CYMS last week and according to coach David Marshall, didn't play their best.

"Last week's loss was a bit disappointing but today we got a win, a hard-fought win, Zig Zag played really well today I think.

"We sort of just lost our structure, we didn't play as good as we can but you have those days, we hung in there and were just fortunate to get the win, that's the main thing.

"It was a great local derby, we still got a lot of work to do by the end of the year in the likes of making ourselves available for the grand final if we get that far," Marshall said.

Standout players for the Panthers were Cheryn Van Veen at the back and Clare Bosman running through the centre mid.

Zig Zag women's premier league hockey leadership member Tamika Bostock said her young side went out onto the turf with a game plan and did not disappoint.

"We stuck to our game plan and we really stuck it to them [Panthers]," she said.

She said Zig Zag had an awesome group of girls that were going to work wonders in the future.

"This is just the start of what's to come. We've been doing not too bad the last couple of weeks, we've had a bit of guidance so we've really stepped it up and a got a bit more confidence behind out younger players.

"We were a bit of the underdogs today, we rattled them [Panthers] and they stepped up and we tried our best to match them," Bostock said.

Bostock said the entire team played an outstanding match and she couldn't fault anyone.

"I couldn't say there was a standout or a fault, it was a group effort and I'm really proud of the girls," she said.

Zig Zag will take on St Pats on Saturday, June 29 in which Bostock said would be another tough game but she was confident.

"If we can keep this performance up I think we'll go alright," she said.

The Panthers will take on Confederates on the weekend and coach Marshall was ready bring the team's A-game.

"It will be a very tough game, we play Confederates who are coming fourth at the moment and they're the team that could almost win the comp.

"We've gotta bring our A-game if we want to win that," he said.
