The Monarch Butterfly, which was installed on Tuesday, April 2, immediately drew the attention of passersby.
It is the creation of local artists Tim Johnman and Stephen Cunningham.
The metal and fibreglass sculpture was fitted as part of the Lithgow Tidy Towns Laneways Project, which has installed items of interest around the Lithgow township's laneways.
On Monday, volunteers installed an Anzac Day display in Gallery Lane.
Mr Johnman said he hoped people would discover the butterfly as they walked down the street.
The project was made possible with funding from Lithgow City Council.
Lithgow Tidy Towns' Kathleen Compton said the vision was to fill Lithgow's business district with artworks that were a little different and quirky.
"The Monarch Butterfly I always thought was endemic to the region but, according to reading I've been doing, it actually came from North America in the 1860's," she said,
"It enjoyed NSW, obviously, and spread and you can see it all around here.
"They can get big, but not quite this big."
