Emergency services and Bathurst Regional Council staff have rushed to the scene and westbound traffic is building up quickly.
Photos from the scene show the crane has fallen off the passenger's side of a low-loader trailer and is balanced next to the guard rail running along the bridge.
The incident occurred shortly after 12.30pm and a decision has yet to be taken on the best way to remove the crane.
It is expected both westbound lanes will be closed at some point and traffic will be reduced to one lane each way along the eastbound lanes of the bridge while a salvage operation is launched.
Motorists have been warned to avoid the area.
