Over recent days we began with the official opening of a new accommodation wing at the Three Tree Lodge aged care facility at Bowenfels.
Then came another vital development for the aged and infirm with the first sod being turned on construction of a major expansion of the Cooinda-Tanderra facility in Church Street in Lithgow promising benefits well into the future.
Towards the end of the week the construction fences came down on a long held dream for this city, the new adventure playground in Endeavour Park.
It was immediately the hottest ticket in town at the weekend with many hundreds of kids and parents keen to christen what really is a superb, state of the art facility, as good as (if not better than) this column has observed anywhere
It will be officially opened on Saturday so check it out.
All three projects have become a reality through State and Federal regional funding.
Depending on how you view the importance your local amenities there was another significant development with an apparent start on the Hungry Jack’s fast food outlet at Dunns Corner.
The hamburger happy lot among us have been somewhat bemused at the inaction over several years since the company invested heavily in acquiring the site and removing the homes that stood there.
Now apparent construction equipment has begun moving in and the cynics might have to think again.
What’s his name then?
WITH State and Federal elections looming some of the main party hopefuls still have work to do in presenting their CVs. In an informal survey by the column across all walks of life we put ‘do you know who ....’ questions about candidates to around 20 locals.
Only four could name either the Bathurst or Calare ALP candidates (another knew the Bathurst candidate’s first name only while another said ‘that feller with the funny name). Five could not name the sitting Nationals’ Member for Calare Andrew Gee.
Three of those interviewed named Luke Foley as Leader of the State Opposition. Luke was famously ousted late last year after a sexual harassment allegation.
On the upside for the candidates all 20 were able to name the Nationals’ present Member for Bathurst Paul Toole.
Not a particularly scientific survey but interesting results nonetheless. For the record the ALP’s man for Bathurst is Beau Riley while for Calare it’s Jess Jennings and the Opposition Leader is Michael Daley.
Dastardly doggie deeds
A correspondent to the column claims people who fail to pick up their dog droppings, particularly in business areas, no pun intended, should be barred from dog ownership. And she may well be onto something. It’s not only rude and anti social it’s also an offence that can cop you a fine. Our caller says that Lithgow’s Hayley Street could qualify as dog poo central. Do the right thing folks; doggie poo bags don’t cost much.
Cold comfort
CHILLY nights have come unseasonally early this year and add to the challenges facing those sleeping rough.
Early morning joggers in Lithgow’s QE Park lately have reported the distressing site of an apparently homeless person seeking to thaw out by leaning over the hot plate on the free public barbecue. How did we come to this?
Achievers
ONCE again Portland did our area proud with an art exhibition that would not be out of place in any major city. And it’s no flash in the pan; they’ve been punching way above their weight for 43 years. The fact that 351 entries were received speaks for itself.
