At the weekend a man sustained serious injuries when he fell 10 metres down a cave shaft.
The 36-year-old, from Batlow in the Riverina, was on a bushwalk with family and friends at Borenore Caves, about 15 kilometres west of Orange, when he fell.
Members of the public attempted to help the man, but emergency services were needed.
Because of the depth to which he had fallen, and the narrowness of the cave, he was trapped for more than three hours.
Central West police District Chief Inspector Peter Atkins said extracted the severely injured man was a difficult undertaking.
“It was a very small, tight area. He had injuries and they needed to get the equipment down 10 metres,” chief inspector Atkins said.
Once lifted to the surface, the man was flown via helicopter to Orange hospital where he was treated for a fractured shoulder and ribs.
