Council's director of infrastructure services Jonathon Edgecombe said it was very disappointing that people took the opportunity offered by the natural disaster to pilfer items.
“It was disappointed and very unexpected,” he said.
Council staff had been out in rotating crews throughout the night helping emergency services coordinate road closures and clearing.
Council did not yet know how many items had been stolen as the area had not been declared safe on Friday morning. A generator was being sourced to ensure security to the building.
