Emergency services were called to a unit on Clarice Street just after midday following reports a woman was been assaulted.
Officers from Chifley Police District attended and found a 68-year-old woman suffering a serious neck injury.
It appeared at first that the woman may have suffered a fall, but paramedics discovered that the left side of her throat had been slashed and there was substantial bleeding.
She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Lithgow Hospital by road and then airlifted to Westmead Hospital where she remains in a critical condition and required surgery.
A crime scene was established and detectives initiated an investigation.
Following inquiries, police arrested a 56-year-old man at the home. He was taken to Lithgow Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder and wound with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear at Lithgow Local Court on Friday, October 5.
Investigations suggest the woman and man are known to each other.

A 68-year-old woman was in a critical condition at Lithgow Hospital on Thursday afternoon after her throat was allegedly slashed at a unit on Clarice Street.
Five NSW Ambulance crews were called to the scene of the incident at Clarice Street at 12.08pm.
A man was arrested at the home on Thursday, October 4 and he remained in police custody. No charges had been laid at the time of publication.
Emergency services were called to the Clarice Street unit after receiving reports that a woman had been assaulted. She was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived.
It appeared at first that the woman may have suffered a fall, but paramedics discovered that the left side of her throat had been slashed and there was substantial bleeding.
Police officers from the Chifley Police District attended the scene and a man was arrested. He was taken to Lithgow Police Station and is assisting police with inquiries.
The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Lithgow Hospital in a critical condition.
