Now Emily Thompson has been called up to perform on the same stage, representing her state as part of the Under 16 All Schools hockey team.
It has been a big couple of weeks in the Thompson household, with sisters Emily and Maggie both being called up for representative duties.
Emily, a Year 10 student at Mackillop College and now now a veteran of representative hockey, will travel to the Gold Coast in August to compete at the Australian Nationals.
Emily will be hoping to better her team's finish from last year, when they took home the silver medal at the Nationals, which was held as part of the Pacific School Games in Adelaide.
Emily's selection followed her appearance at the NSW CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges) Under 16’s squad. The CCC team took on the independent schools at Moorebank.
“I’m looking forward to the tournament, to the competition at the nationals,” Emily said.
She is not a player that is afraid of a little competition. Or a lot, for that matter. Emily has been part of the Panthers women’s squad since she reached 14-years. She plays two games each Saturday, a high school match and then for the Panthers, before backing up to play in the Sydney Women’s League on Sunday.
“I’d like to thank my parents for taking me to training, it’s a big commitment, taking me every Sunday, and the whole family has to come,” Emily said.
“I’m really grateful.”
The youngest of the Thompson crew, Maggie, has been selected for the first time to represent her state as part of the Under 12’s squad.
The Under 12’s Girls Primary School team will take part in the national titles to be held in Newcastle in August.
The St Patrick’s Primary School Year 6 student was selected for the diocesan team before making the Polding representative hockey squad. Her state selection followed.
The sisters have played hockey since they were four-years-old. Maggie plays for her primary school team and then backs up to play in the high school squad for the Lithgow District Hockey Association.
Maggie also represents the region in Lithgow’s Under 13’s squad. Last weekend, Maggie took part in the 13’s state carnival held at Taree.
Emily thanked her coach Wayne ‘Wally’ Gaynor who has dedicated a lot of time to Emily’s training.
Both girls are looking forward to their next challenge.
