In rugby league, the Bears went down 42-6 to the Orange Barbarians who are currently sitting in second place on the leader board.
It was a special moment for a Bears supporter, Jamie, who is a client at Uniting Care Lithgow. He ran out onto the field with the game ball and led the Bears players through the cheering.
Unfortunately Orange Barbarians were too strong for the Bears. The Bears tried hard all game and never gave up. They managed some strong tackles and good runs but were unable to combine the plays.
Bears player Kobe Hunter managed to run over the try line and score for the Bears with Bears fullback Blake Collins converted the try.
The crowds’ points went to Kaleb Ritchey (3), Michael Yeo (2), Peter Lewis and Joel Cameron (1). The Workies Club and Motel Players’ Player went to Kaleb Ritchey.
In league tag, the Bears girls played amazing football. The first try came within minutes, with Shanaya Callaghan receiving a flick pass from Mel Bright to go over the line.
The try was converted by Shanaya in front of the posts. 24 minutes down and the Bears were leading 6-0. One minute until the half time buzzer and Orange Barbarians found a gap in the Bears defence and went over the line levelling the score 6-6.
At this stage the Bears were tiring with the Orange girls finding their feet to score some quick tries. The ball was within the Bears half so many times, with another quick play by Jasmine Spittles to Shanaya to find the gap close to the line to go over for the second time.
Unfortunately the try was unconverted leaving the final score to be 28-10. The crowds’ points went to Jasmine Spittles (3), Shanaya Callaghan (2) and Jessie-Rose Lutchini (1). The Workies Club and Motel Players’ Player went to Jasmine Spittles and the Zambreros Coach’s award going to Katie Jefferys.
The Bears presented the awards at the Bears major sponsor the Lithgow Workies Club.
The Bears would like to thank all sponsors, supporters and volunteers who have come on board this season. It is greatly appreciated. The Bears sponsorship day will be played on June 23. All sponsors and supporters are welcome to attend.
The Bears are running a monster raffle with first prize being a barbecue donated by Bunnings Lithgow, second prize a pedal kart and pressure washer donated by Repco Lithgow, third prize is your choice of a signed Newcastle Knights jersey or a signed Penrith Panthers jersey. Tickets are $2 each, see a Bears player for tickets. They will also be sold at the Bears bar and canteen on game days.
This weekend the Bears are at home for a local derby game against the Portland Colts and Fillies.
The Bears only just narrowly lost against the Colts at Portland in the first round of the competition. With both teams having players out injured, the game could go either way.
Everyone is invited to attend to what is expected to be a great game of football this Saturday at Tony Luchetti Sportsground, Lithgow.
League Tag will be kicking off at 1.30pm and rugby league at 2.30pm.
