The Canberra Gunners are a young full of energy group of boys and use their speed to advantage combined with some very good individual shooters. The Lazers got of to a very good start with Michael Cox leading the way in both rebounding and showing his shooting skills. He was well supported by Adam Marjoram and Terrence Durham in scoring.
Lazers’ good start gave them the first quarter, 29 to 18.
The second quarter saw both teams going basket for basket and both teams showing great defensive skills. In this quarter the Gunners edged out the Lazers 25 to 24, but Lazers took the first half 53 to 43.
Coach Richard Marjoram said the Lazers were full of confidence in the change rooms at half time and players realised to win this game they had to put in a big effort in the third quarter and build a good lead. It also had to come on the back of good defence and playing the five man game and not being individuals.
The third quarter was a good one for the Lazers with Matur Malauch leading the way on scoring some very good entertaining crowd pleaser baskets, this enabled the Lazers to take the quarter 20 to 13 and give Lazers a good lead of 73 to 56 prior to the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Lazers maintain the pressure and Jaidyn Goodwin attacking the basket at every opportunity, this caused the opposition to foul and Jaidyn was put on the free throw line and never disappointed. With a good lead coach Marjoram injected his younger players into the game with a few minutes remaining. Unfortunately they could not close down the opposition and Gunners scored 10 easy points with none in return.
Allthough happy with the win coach coach Marjoram beleived that the players had to learn to close out games and finish the game strong.
“The games that are ahead of them in the near future will test their defensive character,” he said.
“One of the failures of the team this week was our top scorers did not respond well in scoring in the second half and this has to picked up for future games.”
Top scorers for Lazers: Matur Malauch 23, Terrence Durham 20, Michael Cox 16, Adam Marjoram 13 and Jaidyn Goodwin 12. ( Coach Marjoram enforces into his players if we have four to five players scoring double points and combining this with strong defence you always have a good chance of securing victory ) Opposition scorers Dylan Simpson 17, Tristan Scotcher 16, Jarrod Phillips and Stuart Phair 13 each.
Lazers will be away this weekend playing the Queanbeyan Yowies at 6pm on Saturday night before a weekend off.
