There is an event being held in Bathurst and an opportunity for interested people to come and speak to mental health clinicians and managers in an informal manner and ask questions about mental health and mental health services available in the region.
Sometimes people may feel uncomfortable talking about mental health, so this opportunity provides a relaxed environment for people to turn up and talk about their concerns. Bathurst: Thursday, May 24 from 3-4pm at Community Mental Health at Bathurst Health Service. To RSVP email bryan.billington@health.nsw.gov.au.
Local teachers urged to apply for scholarships
I’m urging all diploma-qualified early childhood educators in the Bathurst Electorate to consider applying for a scholarship to boost their qualifications.
Applications for the next round of the NSW Government’s Rural and Remote Early Childhood Education scholarships are open now until June 9.
Since this scholarship program was introduced, the NSW Government has supported 109 educators across the state to upskill.
That’s 109 more bachelor qualified teachers giving our children the best possible early childhood education.
These scholarships are flexible and can be used for a number of costs incurred during studies. This could include textbooks, travel costs, technology to support study, or course fees.
The scholarships, valued up to $10,000, are available to candidates working in a rural or remote community preschool, mobile preschool or long day care service and must not have already commenced an early childhood teaching degree.
This is the fourth round of the $1.3 million scholarship program, which will award up to 30 scholarships every year for four years from 2017 to 2020.
For more information on the scholarships and how to apply, visit the Department of Education website at https://education.nsw.gov.au/early-childhood- education/working-in-early-childhood-education/professional-development-and-scholarships/rural-and-remote-early-childhood-teaching-scholarships
National volunteer week
This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week (NVW), an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers.
Throughout this week, thousands of events across the country will be held to say thank you to the 5.8 million Australians who volunteer including breakfasts, morning/afternoon teas, and luncheons as well as open days, award ceremonies, picnics, forums and training sessions.
Volunteering is a core part of the community and plays a critical role in Australian society, and in Australia’s economy. Within our volunteer organisations, 56 percent of staff are volunteers.
They form a formidable workforce powering many essential community, environmental, sporting, welfare, emergency services, education and cultural services.
Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day), also held during National Volunteer Week, calls for people to wear orange to say thank you to the 40,000 SES members in over 1,000 locations nationally for their service to their communities.
The recent State of Volunteering in Australia report found that 86 percent of volunteer organisations need more volunteers.
So, if you have ever thought of volunteering now’s your chance! Research shows that volunteers live happier and healthier lives. Make a pledge to volunteer this National Volunteer Week and you too can join the 5.8 million Australians helping make Australia the happiest place on Earth.
