The impressively proportioned old trophy bears the inscription ‘Lithgow District Rugby League’, ‘The Blue Bird Cafe Cup for perpetual competition in the district of Lithgow’. Then ‘Presented by Mr Leon Bizzanes 1941’.
Just how long that intended ‘perpetuity’ lasted is unknown but Mercury readers with long (and probably fading) memories may shed some light on the puzzle.
In 1941 the Blue Bird Cafe was located in what is today the Lithgow Post Office, opposite its present Main Street location.
It can be assumed the generous Leon Bizzanes was proprietor.
The grand old trophy had been forgotten and gathering dust in a cupboard at the Mercury office for many years.
It has now been donated by the Mercury to the Lithgow Library’s local history collection for public display.
