Local member for Bathurst Paul Toole and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott announced Lithgow City Band will receive NSW Government funding to remember one of the most important events in Australian history.
Lithgow City Band have been successful in securing $1,750 to help with their 1918 ‘Back from the Brink’ project.
“This project includes the band being part of a play to be staged at the Union Theatre in Lithgow to mark a century since the Armistice of the Great War,” Mr Toole said.
“Shortly there will be a call for people to audition for roles in the play. There’s going to be a cast of about 10 members in addition to the 28 band members involved from the Lithgow City Band.”
Band member Chris Milroy said he hoped the project receives strong local support. The play will be performed in mid-October.
Mr Elliott said the NSW Government was ensuring locals have a place to commemorate the service and sacrifice of diggers.
“As we commemorate the Centenary of the Armistice it is important that young people understand the sacrifices made during the First World War,” he said.
Mr Elliott also called for applications in the latest round of Community War Memorials Funding which is open until Anzac Day.
“New grants of up to $10,000 are now available and I encourage all communities who believe their local memorial needs conservation or protection to apply.”
