It was a dominant show by Oberon, beating the Workies team 24-4 in Friday night’s late game.
The Tigers were not able to take home the top honour, however, which was claimed by host team Bathurst Panthers.
Oberon Tigers captain-coach Luke Branighan said he was still positive about the upcoming Group 10 season, despite the grand final loss.
The Tigers certainly had their chances in Saturday’s final, and led 4-0 at half-time, but were unable to go on with things after the break at Carrington Park. The Panthers claimed the win in what was ultimately a low scoring affair, 8-4.
It was the second time the Tigers had made a pre-season tournament final – having also finished as runners-up at the West Wyalong Knockout. Branighan said there would be disappointment, and then it would be back to work.
“There’s no excuses on our end, Panthers were way too good. We dropped too much ball, but we won’t be using that as an excuse,” he said.
“We’ve had a pretty good pre-season, we made the final of the West Wyalong Knockout as well, no excuses for us not winning there either, but we lost a lot of players in the semis. Today we just weren’t good enough in the final.”
