Lithgow’s Australia Day ceremony at Eskbank House celebrated the achievements of locals making a significant difference in the community. Mayor Stephen Lesslie announced the recipients of this year’s NSW Citizenship Awards, many of whom are very familiar faces around town.

Passionate volunteers, outstanding services in the Lithgow region and community building events were all recognised in the special ceremony.
Young Volunteer of the Year
Emma Martion of Rydal received the Young Volunteer of the Year award for her involvement in the Rydal AH&P Society for more than a decade, as well as her fundraising efforts for the Rydal Union Church and Meadow Flat Public School, and for volunteering at various community events.
Volunteer of the Year
The open Volunteer of the Year award was given to Donna White and Kerry Guerin jointly for their dedicated service to the Small Arms Factory Museum.
Mayor Lesslie thanked them for collectively providing 27 years of service to preserve Lithgow’s local history as well as contributing to Lithgow’s tourism offerings.
Young Citizen of the Year
Hayden Joshua Way was awarded Young Citizen Year for his huge effort in raising $14,000 for the Simon Williams Memorial Charity and walking from Cullen Bullen to Portland in memory of his best friend.
“The Young Citizenship Achievement Award recognises the significant achievements of young people in our community,” Mayor Lesslie said.
“This year it is being awarded to an extraordinary young man that used his initiative to fundraise for a local charity that is close to his heart.”

Citizen Achievement Award
Beverley Coombs was awarded the Citizen Achievement Award for her service to local charities and for her commitment to providing foster care over many years.
“Not only has Beverley provided foster care to many children but she has also served as a committee member for local not-for-profit groups such as the Red Cross, and volunteers for community groups including Legacy for Christmas, Lithgow Community Transport, and nursing homes,” Mr Lesslie said.
Service to the Community Award
The award for an organisation that performs important services to the community was given to the teaching staff of Lithgow Public School’s Special Education Unit.
“For their years of dedication to providing specialist services to young children, enhancing their quality life and the opportunities available to them.”
Outstanding Event of the Year Award
The series of Walk N Talk events, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of mental health, was awarded the Outstanding Event of the Year award.
“The series of Walk N Talk events that took place throughout 2017 provided important opportunities for the community to come together and support each other,” Mr Lesslie said.
