Leard starred in the NSW win over Queensland last week, scoring a hat-trick in the team’s 4-2 win on Friday morning, January 5.
Leard took a penalty corner in the 25th minute to even scores and again at 31 minutes after Queensland once again found their way into the net. She followed it up a minute later with her third goal.
At the time of the game, it made her the lead goal-scorer in the competition. At the end of the championship, she was in third position with eight goals behind West Australians Karri Somerville (14) and Lauren Austin (11).
The Open Women's team got off to a winning start thanks to a 4-2 scoreline against Tasmania earlier in the week before going down 5-3 to Western Australia. After the win against Queensland, the team went down to the ACT 3-4. On Saturday, January 6, the team faced Queensland once again and were too strong for the northern contenders. Leard scored in the second half to help NSW to a 4-3 victory.
Leard was the only NSW player to score when the team suffered a demoralising loss to WA on Saturday afternoon, 9-1. They were unable to make a recovery in the bronze medal match against the ACT on Sunday.
