The Lake Macquarie mother-of-two disappeared during a visit to Muswellbrook in September, 2014.
Her remains were found in bushland on the outskirts of Scone in August last year.
An examination of Ms McBride’s remains indicated she died from a blunt force trauma to the head.
Mr Cunneen was also charged on other unrelated offences to do with burning a rental car and weapons.
He will appear at Newcastle court on August 9 to reply to the charge. Mr Cunneen will not be at the court in person. A Legal Aid lawyer will represent him.
