The opening began with a tribute to the library’s welcoming attitude. The Uke’n’Sing Group performed an original song based on The Village People’s ‘In the Navy’, this time sung as ‘In the Library’, “Where you come for leisure, and literary pleasure.”
Refurbishments to the library, including new carpet, shelving layout, customer service desk and furnishings, were financed through a $118,000 grant from the State Library, as well as financial contribution from the Lithgow Council.
“I am absolutely amazed at what’s happened,” said Paul Toole MP.
NSW State Library representative Ellen Forsyth reiterated the social dimension of libraries.
“Public libraries are some of the only places left in communities that don’t have barriers. Everyone in the community is welcome, which is why they are so important.”
