Lithgow Public School was singled out by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), the organisation that runs the National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) as one of the top 20 most improved schools in NSW for its outstanding results in the numeracy assessment.
Lithgow Public School’s numeracy results in Year 3 have been substantially below the national average since 2012. However, in 2016 Lithgow Public School saw it's Year 5 class gain an above average mark for numeracy compared to similar schools and the national average. Their Year 5 cohort also gained results above the national average in writing and grammar. Overall the school’s results were a vast improvement on last year’s.
Lithgow Public School was selected for ACARA’s most improved list because the school had an overall improvement in NAPLAN results compared to previous years, and compared to schools with a similar demographic of students.
The top performing school in the Lithgow area was Meadow Flat Public School, whose Year 5 group exceeded national and similar school averages in all five assessments. They did particularly well in reading, scoring 42 points above the national average.
Portland Central School has unfortunately seen an overall drop in NAPLAN scores since last year compared to similar school results and national averages. Year 3 and 5 results were below the national average and similar school average in all assessments except Year 5 numeracy.
