ONE of the true ladies of the Lithgow sporting scene is Fay King who after 28 years of bowling captured the prestigious Western District Singles title.
King secured the title after defeating the talented Mimi Coleman from the Lawson club.
To make it through to the final, the pair had to overcome some excellent bowlers over six preliminary rounds with King winning her way to the semi final after disposing of P Evans from Lawson while Coleman edged out Wallerawang bowler Vee Brown.
The final was played at the Lithgow Workmens Club with a good crowd from both finalists’ clubs present plus a large number of neutral spectators on hand to witness the clash.
Ends were even during the early stages and as the final wore on it was King that called on her experience, concentration and determination to go on to win her first Western District major title.
The final was a worthy one with both bowlers earning high praise for their efforts.
“It has been a long time coming,” King said.
“I’m 88 this year and it just goes to show that if you keep trying, nothing is impossible.
“I started bowling when I was 59 and have loved every minute of it since.
“We have a great club and I was pleased to see so many friends at the final barracking for me and offering me their congratulations after.
“It was also special when I found out that my husband Dud and daughter Deb had attended the final without telling me so as not to put extra pressure on me.”
King’s popularity is not only confined to her own Lithgow City Club but is spread right around the district.
At the presentation, District President Jean Wilds congratulated both bowlers on the way they represented themselves and their clubs and also thanked the Lithgow Workmens Club for the way they hosted the championships over the past couple of weeks.
Before taking up bowls, King was a top line hockey player, basketballer, tennis player and squash player for most of her life.
Her fitness belies her age and her sprightly frame can be regularly seen pounding the pavements all around Lithgow along with her husband Dud on their fitness walks.
King has been involved in numerous City Club title wins and she may well be 88 years young this year, but it would not surprise to see her defend her title for a number of years to come.
