But it is only week two of a 21-week season.
Tall Timbers came in fresh as they had the first bye and were confident though Outlaws had other ideas.
The biggest surprise was that Red Sox almost clean sheeted defending premiers Pockets but as their captain pointed out they were in fifth spot last year when they won the competition.
Jiggers beat their club compatriots Miscues in the battle of Club Lithgow.
Carpet One Tall Timbers v Exceltech Industrial Electronics Outlaws: Leon Rust played Cec Thompson and this was not a bad game.
One mistake was all it took to bring the game home for Rust who was playing his usual open style while Thompson was his usual guerilla warfare hit-and-run style.
When Thompson made his mistake at the back end of the game Rust took advantage to bring the game home 63-49.
Mitch McCosker played Justin Nelson in a blow out as Nelson was back to his best.
McCosker had 33 start which was wiped out as Nelson had two breaks of 39 and 25.
Nelson only made three mistakes all game and McCosker could only watch in awe as he was torn apart.
McCosker could only manage to score eight points himself as he wilted to a better player 107-41.
Joe Steffen played Peter Warner and this had the making of a good game as both play very well.
Warner had 28 start, a large start even for some one of Steffen’s capability.
Warner did not let Steffen get into his groove as he played a good safety game after each shot and a 23 break helped grind Steffen down.
Steffen did score 39 points though as Warner put Steffen in the 100 club 100-39.
Robert Bender made his return to interclub snooker when he played Michael Andrews.
Andrews has hit the ground running playing some very inspiring snooker and this game was no different.
Andrews eventually got over the top of Bender who was doing his usual bash the ball hard and wait to see if it went it.
Andrews had the patience and wore him down to win 66-57.
Maurie Smith played Michael Tonkin in a good game by both players with Smith getting a 37 head start Tonkin did very well to get as close as he did.
Tonkin was playing very well and was catching Smith while Smith himself was just doing enough to stay in front.
When Tonkin did get near, Smith was too good in the back end of the game to win 62-48.
The two captains played as Keith Morris met Terry Christian in a fairly close finish.
These two have a rivalry going back a few years with their teams dominating the competition a few years ago and nothing has changed.
Christian played the better of the two as Morris tried hard but Christian put Morris to the sword 49-41.
Outlaws won 5-2 and players of the match were Justin Nelson and Leon Rust.
CW Printing Red Sox v Lithgow Free Range Meats Pockets: John Lyons played Trent Warren in a game between the old master and the young gun and what a game it was.
Both missed a few shots but it was countered by some very good shots as they went toe to toe.
The game was so good and tight it came down to a black ball result and in the end it was the old master Lyons who shone through 72-59.
Garry Nolan played Pockets captain Brett Holt and it was unusual to see Nolan in good form early.
Nolan hit his straps early in the game and was potting some good balls and Holt also was playing some good shots.
What held Holt back was missing some shots which Nolan took advantage of and in the end it cost him as Nolan won 73-52.
Leigh Best played Michael Wellings and the score blew out in the end only because of a good break of 38 by Best.
Best was playing really well and Wellings was also going well but came up against Best at the wrong time.
Best was too good as he won 93-40.
Trevor Cameron played Brad Preston and with Preston having a 20 start Cameron had to be at his best.
Cameron caught up the points and took an early lead and stayed there, Preston being hard pressed to catch up.
Safety was not a factor so good potting was a must as Cameron surged ahead to win 63-39.
Jeff Stait played Shane Eagle which turned out to be a low scoring but good game that came down to the last ball to get a winner.
Eagle eventually won this on the black ball and was the only shining light for Pockets as he won 43-39.
Red Sox captain Tom Gaynor played Trystan Ford who had the game in the bag but a few wayward shots helped Gaynor.
Ford led all the way making it hard for Gaynor but Ford was going in-off on a regular basis which helped Gaynor gain ground.
Gaynor sunk the last three balls to win 71-48.
Red Sox won 6-1 and the players of the match were Garry Nolan and Shane Eagle.
Welch’s Highway Smash Repairs Jiggers v Hunter Mining Methods Miscues: Both team captains met when Greg Sutton played Brian Nightingale in a game that Sutton did everything late in the game to lose only to see Nightingale throw it away.
Sutton played well very early and got away to a 30 point lead before he went missing and Nightingale very easily caught up.
Sutton jawed the pocket four times with balls that set Nightingale up and in the end Sutton was one point in front on the black with both players having a heap of shots until Nightingale took a shot missed the black and gave Sutton the game 67-59.
Jamie Glencorse played Kevin Slaven and with Glencorse not having a win last comp the question was would he finally come good.
This was an entertaining game as both played with safety and mixed with good shots and Slaven’s mistakes Glencorse surged ahead to finally win a game 51-33.
Kyle Lewis played Allan Piggott in a good game as both played and won last week and Lewis had a 22 start.
Lewis was never really headed as Piggott played solidly but could not make up the difference as Lewis matched Piggott shot for shot to win 72-48.
David Adams played Matt Tattersall and for the second week running Adams was unlucky to lose in a black ball game.
Both played very well with Tattersall playing with his usual laid back style and Adams on occasion tensing up a little.
Tattersall scored a 16 break and took Adams to a black ball game and sunk it to win 54-44.
Wayne Lewis played his old mate Robert Farnsworth in a one sided match.
Lewis could not do a thing right and Farnsworth was completely opposite in doing everything went right.
Lewis could only score 15 points as Farnsworth dominated 55-16.
Trent Lewis played Ritchie Bilby and with Jiggers only ahead by a point in the aggregate a lot was riding on this game.
There was no need to worry though as Lewis stood up and brought the game home for Jiggers winning 80-60.
Jiggers won 5-2 and the players of the match were Jamie Glencorse and Matt Tattersall.
Pointscore: Red Sox 10, Jiggers 9, Outlaws 8, Miscues 5, Pockets and Helmets 4 and Tall Timbers 2.
Tonight’s games are Miscues v Outlaws at Club Lithgow and at The Workies Helmets v Tall Timbers and Red Sox v Jiggers. Pockets have the bye.
