Waddell played all his junior football with Workmens Club before being targeted by the Penrith club where he played a number of years in the NRL in the top grade.
He then transferred to the Illawarra Steelers.
A hard running and uncompromising front rower, he commanded respect from both his playing teammates and opponents.
Waddell had spent a couple of days in Lithgow before returning home to Penrith and his passing came as a shock to his many friends and family.
He was only 45 years of age.
He was the son of Carol and the late John Waddell and is survived by daughter Alix and son Corey.
