A LAZER is about to hit Lithgow … this time in the shape of Boaz Gregg who will make his debut for the Workies Lazers this afternoon.
Gregg is the cousin and fellow countryman of Jordan Gregg who made such an impact last season — and if he is as good as Jordan, the Workies Lazers will be more than happy.
He flew in from the United States at the start of March and has quickly enjoyed the Australian way of life.
Boaz hails from Lewiston Idaho where he coached freshman girls at Wentworth Uni.
“I learned a lot about basketball and myself coaching girls.
“I am really looking forward to my stay in Lithgow, Jordan told me so much about it and the friendliness of the Lithgow people.
“It is an excellent opportunity for me to see Australia and I hope I can add something to the Workies Lazers.
“I am already impressed with my teammates and can’t way to go into competition with them.”
Cousin Jordan was snapped up after his superb year with the Workies Lazers by the Hobart Chargers and is currently playing in the C-Ball competition.
The Workies Lazers will be coached by Richard Marjoram with a couple of new faces being added to the squad.
Joining the Lazers for 2012 are locals Kurt Northey, Michael Cox and Ryley Hughes.
“We were missing a big man in the team last season and Kurt brings not only size to the team, but also his all round play,” Marjoram said.
“He will be a real benefit to our side.
“Michael and Ryley are only young and bring to the team speed and enthusiasm and they will blossom playing with the more experienced players.
“I am really looking forward to seeing Boaz in a game situation, he has really impressed at training and is a gun shooter.
“Like his cousin Jordan, I am sure he will be a crowd favourite with the locals.”
The full squad consists of Gregg, Adam Marjoram, Luke Bennett, Kurt Northey, Todd Brownlow, Michael Cox, Peter Griffiths, Peter Phillips and Ryley and Matt Hughes.
The Workies Lazers will start their campaign today when they take on the strong Central Coast CCYC Power with the game being played at Niagara Park on the Central Coast with the game starting at 4pm.
Lithgow fans will be able to see the Workies Lazers next Saturday, April 21, when they take on the Hawkesbury Jets with the game starting at 7pm.
It is going to be a real event with entertainment and junior matches.
