“We’re ten to dozen a short - with up to 25-30 at training each week and every time there’s different faces,” Mr Osborne said.
“We have recruited quite well. If we only play with what we have got now it will be a pretty competitive and strong side.”
Mr Osborne said he had attracted some criticism for posting a flyer on Facebook advertising jobs available in Lithgow along with positions in the Workies Wolves teams.
“What’s occurred is that we’ve got a local businessmen and he’s looking for workers and we’re looking for footballers. With the way we’re going we’re not struggling for players, we’re probably 10-12 short for the top two teams, but he’s been trying for a while to find locals to get those jobs filled.”
“He was going to start advertising and we said we can probably get it distributed just as wide, so we put a flyer together and put it out that way, that was the idea of it, it wasn’t us trying to manipulate people into the town.
“It’s just opportunities for people to come to the district and be out there and get as many players as we can.”
Mr Osborne said he hadn’t received any firm commitments from the promotional flyer.
A few familiar faces have returned to Workies training including Harley Osland, Dave Howard, Cody Godden and Portland’s Jake Gale.
He also mentioned securing the service of brothers Chris and Shannon Daniels from Katoomba.
“We have two brothers from down the mountains who used to play in the development squad for the Roosters and the Rabbitohs.”
He said the squad at the moment was ‘probably a bit off’ the level needed to take out the premiership.
“But never say never. It will be a hard task competing against clubs that have been recruiting hard in the off-season. But then all it takes is that they don’t play to the best of their ability and we do and the result is different.”
He said more under 18s players had been showing up to training.
“We’re starting to get a good response from the under 18s. Over the last three weeks, we’ve had about 11 different faces show up to training we just need them to turn up on the same day,” he said.
The Wolves will have a tough few first games to open the season facing St Pat’s on April 8 and then Oberon, as well as a period of eight weeks they’ll be playing away once the competition enters June.
Mr Osborne said training was still open for new players, with training to take place on Tuesday 6pm and Friday 5.30pm for the next two weeks.
“We are more than happy for anyone who is interested to come,” he said.
