Colin Steele had no idea that he would be presented with the award at the Wallerawang celebrations held at the Community and Sports Club on Friday, January 26.
“It came as a complete shock,” he said.
Danny Whitty, last year’s Citizen of the Year, conspired with Mr Steele’s wife to get him to the ceremony, along with his brother and sister-in-law, while keeping him in the dark.
“We told him we were putting together a family tree,” Mr Whitty said.
Mr Steele was recognised as a founding member of the Night of Legends Committee and the Anzac Memorial Committee.
He helped with the Wallerawang Community and Sports Club’s Sportsman's dinner and been part of many fundraising committees supporting ill members of the Wallerawang community.
Since arriving in Wallerawang in 1958 to play football, Mr Steele has not stopped his involvement with football at a junior and senior level. He has been a player, a referee and then gone on to train other up-and-coming refs.
Mr Steele is a life member of Group 10 rugby league, the Group 10 Referee’s Association, Wallerawang Junior and Senior Rugby League.
