An interest in their own family histories led the women, Lea Wootton, Louise Dean and Karen Brown to study for two years to attain the diploma.
They celebrated their graduation at the Grand Chancellor Hotel, Hobart on December 19, 2017. Family and friends travelled with them to attend the graduation ceremony.
Louise said the diploma study opened up new worlds of research methods and sources to explore family histories.
“It was an experience for me, especially all the computer side of it, quickly learning so many different things,” Louise said.
“Everyone was very helpful.
“For anybody else considering it, I would say give it a go.”
Louise and Lea decided to enroll in the course after finding it advertised on a Facebook site dedicated to genealogy.
During their study, they discovered Karen was also from Lithgow. During a meeting, Lea and Karen found out they were even distantly related.
“They had no idea,” Louise said.
