BOWLERS at the Lithgow City Bowling Club are looking to show they are no pushovers in the game of pairs. The men are hoping to regain top billing for the annual Men’s Spring Pairs on the weekend of September 30 and October 1.

The 2016 event went to the visiting pairing of Matty Lovett-Jeans and Mick Thorne while the 2015 two-day event was won by then Lithgow City bowler Adam Favell when he teamed up with a former Lithgow personality and now Griffith bowler Adrian Hill.
For the locals Kerry Clarke and Al Kenniff will be looking to go one better than their 2016 second placing while multiple club and district pairs winners Jeff Madden and Ian Townsend will also hope to be in the reckoning come the Sunday afternoon.
This event carries $5000 in prize money, drawing a large number of top bowlers from across the state. Entries close September 25 at 5pm and lists are available at the clubhouse.
At the end of the month is another popular event. The event is the JB Kelly Mixed Versatility Sixes and carries $1500 in prize money. In this event the teams of six are split into two teams of triples for the morning play and then a fours and a pairs team in the afternoon.
On the club championship front, nominations are now open for the McMurtrie Mixed Pairs and the club triples and fours championships.
The mixed pairs entries close on August 27, the triples on September 24 and fours on October 10 and entry lists are available in the respective club areas.
Mixed bowls on Sunday August 13 saw top money go to Fay King, June Barnes and Gloria Clarke with 13+17, strong winners over the 12+2 from Col Wotton and Bev Wiggins. Frank Mierczak and Richard Forbes only dropped six ends on their way to returning 15+9 in Saturdayís menís event, second place going to Barry Perry and Col Quince with 14+4.
The full program of social bowls continued on Friday when a score of 12+6 from Col Wotton, Beryl Baker and Gloria Clarke gt them the top spot, easily ahead of the 9+5 from Stan Campbell, Mick Wholohan and Kevin Thomas.
The men’s event on August 9 had Mark Sheppard back on the City greens, teaming up with Paul Crane to record first place with 15+21.
Athol Roach was back in form as was Herman Kozell with a score of 14+15 to take second spot.
