But even landmark status is no defence against the march of time.
At Wallerawang workmen have transformed the landscape with the demolition of the old timber frame cooling towers near the Coxs River frontage.
After the final sections fell last week, all that remains is a mountain of rubble and another part of our industrial history has gone.
The cooling towers dated back to earlier stages of the power station in the late 1950s.
At the other side of the site a giant concrete ‘parabolic curve’ cooling tower – its steam regularly described as ‘smoke pollution’ by out of town media – remains intact.
The power station, taken out of service by EnergyAustralia, also faced the prospect of demolition until the owners received unsolicited interest in partial re-use.
This led to formal invitations for expressions of interest.
The program resulted in an encouraging response from Australia and overseas and more than 15 proposals are currently being processed by EnergyAustralia.
An announcement is expected in the current financial year.
