Decision day campaign
IT'S now just a month to a Lithgow Council double byelection that will not only restore numbers but hopefully return a more responsible attitude to what electors expect from their council. With the clock counting down you can bet there's plenty of behind the scenes plotting, deal making and even, dare we suggest, downright bastardry. One correspondent even reported clandestine 'political' meetings of Lithgow identities in a Bathurst fast food outlet but Donald Trump would probably describe that news tip as false reporting whether true or not. Anyway we can only hope — even if in vain — that political gamesmanship and personality spite will not obstruct progress for Greater Lithgow in the long, cold remainder of this term of council. The dead hand of politics in local government only acts against the interests of the community.

Parting shot?
SUMMER storms come and go but the wild blast that drenched the valley on Friday was one of Ma Nature's more spectacular efforts — perhaps a farewell shot to mark the end of a Summer that has re-written the record books. It was an unwanted welcome to Lithgow for the proprietor the new 7-Eleven outlet at Bowenfels that was temporarily out of business little more than 24 hours after the opening. Same story for Maccas and other businesses in that part of town. Just metres away police were getting in some practice at directing traffic when the traffic lights failed at our busiest highway intersection. Parts of Lithgow in the narrow path of the storm copped an inch of rain in less than 30 minutes while just up the road at Wallerawang they didn't get a drop.
