As the current, official draws stand, both Group 10 and Group 11 will host grand finals on Sunday, September 10 – a clash both competitions have endeavoured to avoid in recent times.
Group 10 chairman, Zamparini was miffed as to why the new Group 11 board rubber stamped such a draw, with Group 10’s schedule ratified in December last year – 10 weeks ago.
“I’m a bit surprised they’ve done that,” Zamparini said after hearing of the clash.
“If I’m a player and I’m late to the game I’d have checked (if there was a clash) first before I schedule a day like grand final day.
“We’d love to be able to enjoy their grand final, and I’m sure they’d feel the same about ours. It doesn’t make sense.
“You’d think Western might have to step in here. Common sense has to prevail.”
Both Western premierships are sponsored by Tooheys New, and Zamparini added it wasn’t fair on the major backer of each competition to choose which grand final to attend.
Both deciders are also well attended by members and supporters of either competition.
“I know a lot of players from here travel to check out the Group 11 grand final,” he said.
“Derrick Hoe, the Group 11 president, came to our grand final last year. I just can’t see why they’re on the same date.”
There is wiggle room for a potential move in dates.
Group 10 kicks off on April 2, while the opening round of the 2017 Group 11 competition isn’t until April 30.
Bringing Group 11 forward a week, rather than back one, will result in a September 3 finale and also avoid a clash with the Blowes Clothing Cup grand finals – the region’s major rugby union competition – which are booked in for the weekend of September 16.
