Two of the three grades could be crowned Central Mountains District champions, depending on the weekend results.
After being promoted to the No 2 grade following their State No 3 grade win last year, the No 2s need to win both their games on the road.
It will be a tough weekend for this grade, having to play Grenfell after a long bus trip tomorrow morning, then back up the next day against the strong Cowra side.
It is hoped dual victories will be enough the top grade bowlers, but even the, they will haver to rely on other results going their way to advance in their quest for higher honours.
The No 7 teams’ attempt to wrest the district title is a much simpler one.
Holding a 10-point lead over Rylstone, all the No 7s have to do tomorrow is take one of the three rinks when they meet Rylstone in Lithgow.
Lithgow City are on 33½ points, a clear 10 points ahead of Rylstone on 23½, with a maximum of 10 points available.
Wallerawang on 22 and Mudgee (21) will play each other, but the result will have no bearing on who finishes in top spot.
For the No 5s, though, it is the end of the road, having no chance of taking the district title.
But they can determine who will take the title when the match up against Lithgow Workies, also at home.
Wallerawang currently lead this grade on 24½, but only two points clear of Lithgow Workies.
A strong win on the aggregate points would allow Wallerawang to go through, while a big loss could hand the title to Workies.
Teams for the weekend are:
No 2 (to leave the club at 8.30am sharp for tomorrow’s game against Grenfell): J Madden, L Barnes, J Lahache and G Pitt; A Favell, M Johnson, K Clarke and A Roach; I Townsend, F Mierczak, G Mendoza and P Kearney.
No 5 v Workies at City, 1pm start: W Kennedy, J Bannerman, I Birk and B Norris; B Perry, G Sutherland, D Robson and R Bilby; B Kiernan, K Shorney, S Campbell and D Kipp.
No 7 v Rylstone at City, noon start: J Rayner, W Wade, G Bender and I Vadkerti; I Northey, J Banasiak, D Hunter and G Quinn; J Perry, A Case, A MacKinnon and R Forbes.
Minor singles title
The quest for one of the hardest club titles to win — the minor singles — is down to the final two games.
Frank Mierczak as already through to the final and is awaiting the victor of the John Pearton versus Iggy Vadkerti match up.
For Pearton, is was a long wait, having to find out who his opponent would be from the Pitt versus Kipp match up.
Firstly Pitt over came the challenge from Kipp, who let a 12-7 lead disappear to finally go down 32-20.
Pearton finally go his chance to get in a game of singles and showed the long wait was no disadvantage, leading throughout against Pitt.
Behind early Pitt staged a midgame comeback to only trail 20-21 but six consecutive ends all but put paid to Pitt’s challenge.
Pearton eventually took the game 33-25.
A comparatively newcomer to lawn bowls and graduate of the Thursday men’s twilights, Iggy Vadkerti proved too strong for a down on form Stan Campbell.
Vadkerti held sway for the majority of the game before Campbell found some form to score 13 shots over four ends to trail 26-21.
Vadkerti then took three shots from Campbell to lead 26-21, but a four and a two gave Campbell a one shot lead at 27-26.
Holding his nerve, Vadkerti scored a three and a four to wrap up the match at 33-27.
For Frank Mierczak, the final scoreline in his quarter final square up with Bob Kiernan looked clear cut at 31-15 but the scorecard showed a different story.
The early ends were tight before Mierczak won a strong of ends to go from 11-all to lead 23-11, holding Kiernan out over the closing stages.
Mierczak was then up against the Flying Scotsman Angus MacKinnon in the semi final.
MacKinnon looked as though he would prove too strong and had a 10-shot lead.
Mierczak got his game back in order to only allow MacKinnon a further seven shots over the next 17 ends to advance to the final with a 32-25, victory.
