Captain Melanie Palmer, pictured here receiving her red helmet from Station Officer Noel Ford, has been appointed to fill the position created by the retirement of long serving captain Lionel Johnston.
She’s no stranger to the demands of the role after serving as deputy for 12 of her 19 years in the service.
“Mel was a groundbreaker for women in the service and proved that female firefighters can handle the challenges alongside the men,” Station Officer Ford said.
Since her initial appointment several women have joined the ranks at both Lithgow and Lithgow West brigades.
An information session for anyone interested in joining the brigade part time will be held on January 20.
