Join us at St John’s
IN case we needed reminding Christmas really is looming and that will be reinforced in coming days with announcements of special services and carols programs. First off the mark with services are the enthusiastic people behind the salvation and restoration of historic St John’s Church at Wallerawang. The Christmas Eve service at that unique setting is 11.30. St John’s might not be quite our oldest church but it probably has the most interesting history. It was constructed by the pioneering Barton family as a private church in 1800s and was in recent years saved from stone by stone relocation to Canberra after a determined local effort.
Unfair comparison
IT’S White Ribbon Week and we took notice of a government statement yesterday that apprehended violence orders (AVOs) are to be reworded. The legal jingoism is to be replaced, they said, with language ‘that a 13-year-old can understand’. That’s an unfair comparison; 13-year-olds are more intelligent than domestic violence thugs. The local court lists tell us that we have a problem in Greater Lithgow but we’re not as bad as Orange; that city has the decidedly unpleasant status of having the highest per capita rate of domestic violence in NSW.
